My major project was written on the most interesting source we looked at for this class in my opinion. I wrote my Major Project on the 2 Dope Queens podcast. What first grabbed my attention is Robinson and Willams attitudes and tones for each and every episode. Not a single episode of the podcast felt like a formal discussion. Rather, it was like hearing two good friends talk at a bar, something I miss in this post-Covid world. This light hearted tone would at times give way, yet never disregarded, to talk about serious issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and much much more. The 2 Dope Queens never lose sight of the humor in the show again making it seem like just a couple of friends talking about serious stuff at a bar, naturally in both examples it never stays serious for long allowing for the two comedians to touch on some serious topics yet never ruin the funny and light hearted tone they craft with each and every joke.
I am so glad you enjoyed this podcast so much. And I love that it led to a response paper and your final project. That's the ideal aim for the way the class is structured.
ReplyDeleteAlex, it sounds like you wrote a fascinating final project. I too, thought that the 2 dope queens podcast was rather intriguing. You mention their ability to use light hearted humor but also mix that in with serious critque; I think that it was one of the main themes of this class and one of the coolest things I got out most of our readings and videos. So thats awesome you were able to elaborate on such an essential theme of the class for your major project.

I think that Phoebe and Jessica would be really happy to hear the kind of impression that they left on you. I think their vibe that you described, as "two friends talking in a bar" was definitely what they were shooting for with the podcast.

I really enjoyed reading through this post and also your Major Project draft and seeing how you analyzed and portrayed the show's different aspects and characteristics! My personal favorite episode is the one with Michelle Obama. I think it's just so cool to me to see a former First Lady so laid in conversation, along with making jokes!
